Most Improved for Senior Meals Delivered Mom's Meals

Our Updated Mom's Meals Reviews

We have reviewed Mom's Meals numerous times throughout the years, and have been quite critical of the quality of these meals, especially as a senior meal delivery solution for family caregivers. Mom's is a medicaid senior meal delivery service, so they are restricted by budget, but in the past we felt there was little effort going into producing a quality meal for seniors and the elderly.

That has all changed with our most recent review which shows an impressive improvement in every area a customer can experience this service. In our past three orders, we have always experienced broken seals on the microwave trays. In our 2014 order almost half of the seals were broken. Broken seals are not only a food safety concern they ruin the food. In our latest order we didn't have any broken seals on 21 meals purchased from the company.
We classify Mom's Meals as a Medicaid Food Provider, meaning the company is challenged with creating nutritious meals that meet government and health provider requirements and producing these meals at a very inexpensive price. Private pay pricing costs $7, and we are sure it is much less for government contracts. Other companies that share this market at this price include Homestyle Direct and Traditions Meal Solutions. Top Chef Meals, which doesn't do Medicaid, might average a dollar higher per meal for much better quality.

We don't like to say we "mark on a curve, " but we do understand the limitations and challenges these services have. Obviously, you are not going to find a rack of lamb on the menu, as you will at Home Bistro, but you're not going to pay as much as $15 for a meal. We have great respect for these companies because they provide food to millions of seniors and elderly around the country, who may be eating cat food (or not eating at all) if it weren't for these companies. Not to mention all the family caregivers who may struggle with financially providing three meals a day for their loved ones.
In our past orders, we have always experienced excessive water in the compartment trays, usually for the entree. Excessive water creates water damaged food that has the seasoning and texture of the meal washed away. In our latest order, we found only one meal with some water in it, which we would not classify as excessive.

In our past orders, we had issues with reheating, a lack of complete meals, cracked or leaking trays, small portion sizes, and cheap ingredients. In our latest order, we found all of these past issues have been fixed.

A week after our tasting, we are still very impressed with the quality improvements Mom's has made since our last order. The most positive feedback came from our resident chef blogger who has great insight and experience in the meal delivery business. We are not sure if he has ever complimented a meal delivery more for their improvements.

Mom's Meals Review of their Senior Meals and Prepared Meal Delivery Service
Mom's prepared senior meals offer over 50 different meals including breakfast, lunch and dinner, and will support seniors who are managing chronic disease, recuperating at home, or looking for convenient meals.

No Satisfaction Guarantee

Mom's Meals offers a "satisfaction guarantee," which reads more like sales copy and doesn't specifically state what consumers are entitled to, should they be unhappy with the food. But it does say this: "Mom’s Meals will NOT issue any refunds for any meals and/or shipments that have already been delivered."

We couldn't find any mention of Gift certificates being offered at this time. This company supplies food for many agencies including Medicaid in over 35 states and health care providers. The company is a subsidiary of Purfoods.

Limited A la Carte Shopping

You are able to choose and select the meals you wish to buy, however, you are forced to purchase in order quantities of 7, 10, 14, 21. As of this writing, the cost of meals are $6.99 plus $14.95 for shipping.
Mom's Meals We Would Recommend

We always say a food picture doesn't lie. You can pretty much get a good idea of a meal is going to taste by its presentation. We tried to match as many "before and after" pictures as possible so we can show you just how much these meals have improved. You can click on the name of any meal to see a closeup view.
Beef and Noodles
Beef and Noodles - $7

We searched the shipping box for this meal because we all remembered the last time we had it. It was inedible, and we wanted to test this meal first. To our surprise, the beef and noodles were very good, and we loved the side of broccoli and cauliflower and cheese which reheated perfectly without being mushy. We noticed the owner pulling the label out of the garbage to double-check this was a Mom's Meal. This meal set the tone for our day.
Chicken and Vegetable Fajita with Spanish Rice
Chicken and Vegetable Fajita with Spanish Rice - $7

When we ordered this we did so with a chuckle because there is so much that can go wrong trying with the wrap trying to reheat this meal. Mom's didn't put the wrap in the tray, as most companies would, resulting in an amazingly delicious meal. You could almost say meals as we had enough food to make two stuffed wraps. Our chef blogger called them restaurant quality, a review he doesn't give out freely.
Cheeseburger with Mixed Vegetables
Cheeseburger with Mixed Vegetables  - $7

You are only going to go so far with a microwave cheeseburger, and this is a meal most other companies have struggled with so much they take it off the menu.

Again, Mom's solves the reheating problem by not putting the bun in the microwave tray. The burger was about as good as you can get.
Spaghetti and Meatballs
Spaghetti and Meatballs - $7

he meatballs are the same precooked meatballs you will find you will find at the market but the sauce was good, and the pasta was perfectly cooked. The peas with onion and pepper bits were good too, and nice to see a vegetable other than what comes out of a can or standard frozen vegetable bag in the meal.
Cheese Lasagna
Cheese Lasagna - $7

his lasagna is a little small but the standard size you will get at this price. There was more ricotta cheese than average, and the sauce was thick and hearty. The addition of mixed vegetables makes this a more balanced meal.
Chicken and Noodles
Chicken and Noodles - $7

This is one the meals that underwent a massive metamorphosis. The portion size is much larger, and the peas make it a complete meal. It was pretty darn tasty too. The chicken and noodles part of the meal maintained the same portion size.
Cheese Omelet with Pancakes
Cheese Omelet with Pancakes - $7

The last few times we ordered this meal there was no cheese in the omelet. Now it is packed with cheese! The omelet is not one you would get from a short order cook, but it gets the job done and it quite tasty. The pancakes reheat perfectly as if they came off the griddle.
Salisbury Steak
Salisbury Steak - $7

This is the a similar precooked beef patty used as the meatloaf that we didn't recommend, but it works in this meal because of the delicious gravy. The potatoes and green beans make this a classic comfort meal on a budget.
Mushroom Risotto
Mushroom Risotto - $7

This was another meal we chuckled at when we ordered. Risotto is near impossible to do as a reheated microwave meal. Home Bistro has a very good one; this one might just be the second best. Not that it is going to be like getting Risotto at a restaurant, but an excellent offering at this price.
Chicken Alfredo
Chicken Alfredo - $7

Another well-done meal with tender strips of chicken in a creamy Alfredo sauce that reheated perfectly and may probably be the best you can expect from a microwaved Alfredo sauce.

Our chef blogger recommends you sprinkle a bit of Parmesan on it. The side of Italian Beans was a nice change of pace to the standard fare.
Tuna Casserole
Tuna Casserole - $7

This is another meal that was significantly improved from our last few tries. The noodles reheated "spot on" al dente, and the Apple Raisin Crisp dessert was a pleasant surprise, and treat.
Grilled Chicken Marsala
Grilled Chicken Marsala - $7

The Marsala sauce lacks a little in flavor and we found only two mushroom bits, but the meal comes with large portion of side noodles and generous chicken breast. Good to have in your inventory.
Chili and Cornbread
Chili and Cornbread - $7

Chili soup is how we described our last experience with Mom's chili. This one is much better, and the cornbread is a very nice extra.
Pork Tenderloin
Pork Tenderloin - $7

Most companies, and even meal delivery services that charge more per meal than Mom's, will give you a small portion of pork with this meal.

We enjoyed the size of the portion as well as the rice, which rarely comes well in a microwave meal. We would have preferred the rice be in a separate compartment, but we're splitting hairs.
Breakfast Scramble
Breakfast Scramble - $7

Tasted and looked like real eggs to us and we loved how they sneaked some vegetables in the scramble to meet the nutritional requirements of the meal. The dessert was great again, but we might have preferred hash browns. A "hungry-man" sized portion too.
Beef Meatballs with Mushroom Gravy
Beef Meatballs with Mushroom Gravy - $7

The pasta is the star of the show again. The meatballs are precooked, and there could be a little more gravy, but this is a good meal.
Beef Goulash and Mixed Vegetables
Beef Goulash and Mixed Vegetables - $7

Great pasta with hearty chunks of beef. A plain mixed vegetable side, but still a good senior meal.
Mom's Meals We Probably Would Not Reorder
Cheese Omelet with French Toast and Sausage
Cheese Omelet with French Toast and Sausage - $7

The Omelet was great, the French Toast accounted for two slices (about one third of a piece of toast) and the sausage like might have been just over an inch long. While the quality was there, the portion size was too small.
Homestyle Meatloaf
Homestyle Meatloaf - $7

This was not a very good meal in the past and didn't get much better in in 2017. The homemade meatloaf, which was dry and flavorless, was replaced with a highly processed, precooked beef patty covered in ketchup. The sides were good, but the meatloaf disappoints.
Biscuit and Sausage Gravy
Biscuit and Sausage Gravy - $7

We are New Yorker's so we don't see much biscuits and gravy, but most of our staff has traveled to the south and experienced biscuits and gravy there. In fact, our owner is known to travel the country just to have a meal, and biscuits and gravy are one of those meals he will travel to have. This breakfast fell short of our expectations.
Shared Experiences from Other Family Caregivers
I Would Call It Restaurant Quality

"I just ate one of the best meals i have every had...from moms meals sweet and sour chicken. I would call it restaurant quality, and maybe even Chinese restaurant quality! the vegetables were so crisp and fresh, the chicken tender, and the sauce was so good I added a few spoons of the rice to soak it all up and I seldom eat rice. it was filling and satisfying. My only problem with moms meals, the packaging. I cannot lift it. (the one week box) I think half the ice stuff would suffice and cut the weight a lot."

Just Another Way to Rip People Off

"$50 for six SMALL microwave dinners! They look to be about 3 dollars if you bought them in a store. Six times 3 is $18 dollars but they're charging $50. The best/worst part of it is that they stuff two enormous frozen gel packs in it and those have to thaw, then be put into the garbage, and a VERY sturdy 40lb pound cardboard box with TONS of Styrofoam in it. I see now, this 'meal plan' given to me by insurance is just another way to rip people off (tax-payers). You can get 6 microwave meals (decent ones) for 18 dollars. Delivery is a pain with the trash left over."

"Beef goulash over pasta is really rotini in meat sauce."

Tiny Small Portions

Don’t be deceived by the picture on the front of the menu with a nice big piece of chicken and two vegetables; the reality is a small chicken patty with only one vegetable included. The packaging only has two compartments, so there isn't any space for a third item.

“Chicken with creamy mushroom gravy” is really made of “chicken breast, water, vegetable protein product, sodium phosphate, flavoring, salt.” So that is not the same as a piece of chicken, and definitely no resemblance to the picture. That meal was supposed to come with grape juice—no grape juice, no beverages at all in the shipment. It was supposed to be chicken, vegetable, and potato. No potato.

Barbecued chicken is basted with barbecue sauce and grilled. What they sent was another chicken patty, cooked via microwave or whatever process (no grill marks) with a dab of barbecue sauce on top. Flip it over; no barbecue sauce on the bottom, therefore proving the sauce was added before sealing the package, but not in cooking.

Beef goulash over pasta is really rotini in meat sauce—no beef chunks at all. SO that is total false advertising. Beef goulash is beef chunks, usually chuck, over egg noodles. Goulash is an Austrian/Hungarian dish. Rotini with meat sauce is an Italian pasta dish. BUT the package does claim to be goulash over pasta. I defy anyone at Mom’s Meals to produce a cookbook that says, “to make goulash boil some rotini and spoon in a little meat sauce.”

The meatloaf and the Salisbury steak seem to be the same thing (beef patty of “beef, textured protein”). The meatloaf has a little squirt of ketchup, the Salisbury steak has some brown gravy, both very dried out.

The “Pepper Steak with gravy over penne pasta and spiced fruit crisp” is not a steak, it is just another beef patty (literally labeled “Salisbury steak” on the ingredients), no peppers, some gravy with rice, not pasta. There was no spiced fruit crisp, but the compartment was about 1/5 filled with what I think were cranberries in a very sweet sugary syrup.

The website (https://www.momsmeals.com/our-food/) says “safekeeping of meals in a refrigerator for 14 days from the date of delivery.” The delivery was November 11, 2021. But some of the meals say “good until Dec 3.” Some have no date on them at all, so you just don’t know.

On November 11, 2021, Beatrice at Mom’s Meals promised to have a supervisor call me. As of today. November 26, 2021, nothing yet.

I Love This Service

"I get these meals delivered to my 80-something year old mother and I LOVE this service! I had been using other services, but they were expensive and the food was a bit spicy for her. We switched to Mom's Meals and we are very happy. Not only do I get more meals for less money, she really loves the food. Yes, the menu doesn't change a lot, but there are close to 15 meals to choose from in each category, so it doesn't get boring. One con - you can't really set it up using their website or app, but that is more than made up for by their warm and helpful customer service reps. This is the 3rd service we've tried and I am so happy we found them."

Inadequate Meal Portions

"When I was first offered this service after being hospitalized, I was thrilled. Not having to cook for 4 weeks when ill is a good thing, especially since my husband doesn't cook at all. But, upon trying the service, I was no longer thrilled; heck I was beyond dismayed. There are a few meals that are almost ok, but most are not. The "meat" in the meals is not meat-it's a soy product, and is spongy and tasteless. The calorie counts and carbs are way too high, but because the nutrition sheet is in the smallest font possible, no one can easily read them, so, after struggling to read a few with a magnifying app, I gave up.

Many of the meals are an inadequate size for an adult, although some are adequate in volume. For instance, the chicken waffle is a joke. It consists of one single tiny waffle, about 2" by 2" square, and one very small "chicken" nugget (soy nugget, actually) on top of the waffle. This is less than a toddler eats, let alone an adult. In order to stomach the waffle, you need to remove it from the package and toast it, as who wants a soggy wet waffle that's been microwaved? It also had some overly sweet peach and oat dessert, but that was so sweet it went in the trash, as did the pure sugar, maple flavored syrup that was included. I toasted and ate the tiny waffle, using some sugar free Smucker's pancake syrup I had, but tossed the peach stuff and the "chicken" nugget. I did suffer through a few of the meals each week, but by the last week, all of the meals went in the trash as I just couldn't stomach another one of their "meals". Instead, I am eating frozen meals from the grocery store-also not great compared to my home cooking, but I know the ingredients, and nutrition, plus they use actual meat.

Almost every side item that came separately in the box also went in the trash from day one. All the puddings, juices, margarine, cheap bread, cookies, and so on, went directly in the trash. I don't eat pudding cups, I never drink juices as they're just empty calories and sugar, the included bread is basically cheap store brand junk that I would never buy, I only use real butter, never margarine, and so on.

The barbecue "chicken", besides being soy instead of real chicken, was so dang spicy that I couldn't even eat it. Maybe some people like to have their mouth burned by overly spicy, hot barbecue sauce, but not me!

Also, the microwave times on every pack are way off, just so you know. We have a brand new, high wattage microwave and every single meal took at least twice as long as stated.

I think meal delivery for seniors after being hospitalized is a great idea, but the company they're using is totally the wrong one. It's high calorie, high carb and low nutrition for what they offer in each meal, there's no actual meat, and much of it is tasteless, inadequate and not healthy in any way, and is the wrong way to go for seniors. Find a company that offers decent meals with decent meats, lots of healthy vegetable side dishes and so on, and that would be a winning combination."

I Could Not Force Myself To Eat What They Call Meals

"I read the reviews and I am new to the company so I can’t really give a big opinion since I am new. However I have had 2 long rounds now with Mom’s Meals and I was going without eating a lot due to the fact that I could not force myself to eat most of what they called meals. They do change quarterly, but VERY small changes. They also will not listen to any of the customers suggestions.

As a new customer of Harvest Select, I so far am really enjoying their meals and I am eating vegetables again for the first time in months. The vegetables are nicely blended and not like something transferred from a package and into your meal. I love vegetables but with Mom’s Meals you could only spruce up nasty so much before puking them up and yes I did puke them up. These vegetables are a variety, taste delicious. These vegetables only need a bit of natural (salt free) seasoning if you wish for more flavoring.

The main dish is excellent and actually a real main course and I am full after I have ate it. I love the fish! I love the portion size and the natural flavorings they use to make you really enjoy the meal. Mom’s Meals is more like slop in a dish and a lot of pasta and some rice. Harvest Select prepares food with taste and substance to it. I am grateful that I have this alternative.

Packaging is a short fall for Harvest Select. They really could separate the meals into a sectioned dish. And they ship only 2 times a month, however they changed to weekly for me at my request. I rent a room and am very limited in storage space. This would be a big plus for many. I know there are plenty of people with space limitations. I think it would greatly increase the amount of others who would love to used the services of this company. Mom’s Meals has fantastic packaging and shipping. A lot could be learned from them in this area.

I did have a couple of meals from Harvest Select that required draining the liquid from them. I also had a couple of meals where it looked like someone sliced the film top open with a knife. And most of the trays of food looked like it had come through a hurricane. They were quite dented and banged up. When shipping the meals they would do better if there was cardboard between the layers for better protection. I read where the company is working on making improvements to the shipping process. I think it those who are very unhappy were kind and told the company in a nice way and also offered suggestions it might turn around soon, they could excel in these areas. We are all a team and they need our part to make it all successful.

All in all they so far are like going to a fancy restaurant for dinner after many, many, many months of eating Mom’s Meals. So let’s help Harvest Select improve and become everything they can be."

You Know There's A Problem When The Dogs Won't Eat It

"Been with Mom's Meals off & on for years. They only let Oklahoman's order from the menu they send us and not from the list on their site which leaves anyone with diabetes in trouble. Most meals have "fruit" sides which they Highly Sugar, so much there uneatable even if washed off and Veggies are covered in oily fake butter. All meat meals are "Processed" soy & fillers and you know there's a problem when the dogs wont eat it. Don't know how this is healthy serving high calorie, high sugar, high fat & highly processed food. I drink the orange juice when available."

The Quality of the Food is Better Than What I Expected

"Most of the mom's meals we've ordered for my mother have been very good. The quality of the food is better than I expected and there is a large selection of meals. I do feel the menu is not updated often enough and some of the meals, like the Salisbury Steak, Meatloaf, Spaghetti, etc., have been there for at least 3 years. Once in a while, a new item will be added, however, it gets boring ordering the same meals week after week after week. I think there should be a website where those receiving the meals can vote for their favorite dishes and perhaps the ones voted most for could stay on the menu, while others could be replaced with something new. Possibly even have a "suggestions box" on the website where people can offer suggestions for meals they'd like to see made available and others could vote on them. This would show Mom's Meals which ones seem most interesting to purchasers and they might consider some of those suggestions.

Another issue I have is that so many of the meals include "gelatin" and while I've asked to have that left out, I was told it can't be left out so I'm throwing it away every week. Gelatin has no nutritional value, it's all sugar and in the warmer weather, even with ice packs in the boxes, it starts to melt and is half liquid by the time I get home from work to bring it in. Hopefully they'll consider replacing that with something else. All in all, I think it's a good thing for seniors, but definitely needs some updating."

Annoyed At The Small Portions

"I have tried Mom’s Meals twice in a row now and am switching to another provider. I can eat most of the meals but am annoyed at the small portions and lack of sauce and/or gravy. I was ranking each meal to help decide what to order next time. On a scale of 1 to 10 where 5 is just acceptable, I find the meals average about 5.5 and never go over 6.4. I asked the girl at the plant about meal quantity based on a person’s size and suggested that they are suitable for a 90 yr old that weighs 105 lbs. I need more sustenance for my 200# frame. So I ate all ten meals in one week and was still hungry. I hope another provider is better."

Looking For Another Company

1. Many (if not most) of the items you reviewed have been removed from the menu.
2. Plastic film covering the meals is very difficult to remove. They must have changed suppliers as a cost-saving measure. Very poor decision. I'm looking for another company more considerate of their customers.

Response to Comments from Moms Customer
Hi Laura, thank you for your comments! When we chose our meals we used the General Wellness menu and found all of the meals still available for purchase. Perhaps the difference in the meals you see is the the top of menu you are ordering from.

Also, in our past experiences with Mom's we found a lot of issues with excessive water and cracked package seals. We noted that the new seals might be a little difficult to remove, but we think it is an improvement to their food service. Again, thank you for your comments!

Disappointed

"I've become very disappointed with Mom's Meals products over the last few years. Starting with portion size, which has diminished over the last few years, along with overall quality which has also diminished. Excessive water in the trays ruining the "meal", lack of sauce or gravy on select meals, a dry "meat patty?" used for meatloaf and Salisbury steak which lacks any flavor and has only a drop of catsup or gravy, and placed on top of diced or mashed potatoes instead of by itself, the pulled pork meal is so unappealing to the eye I wouldn't even attempt to eat it, a pepper steak (meat patty again) with two very tiny pieces of pepper, a breakfast consisting of a "Colby cheese omelet and french toast" which often lacks the cheese and contains only two pieces of french toast one inch wide (the equivalent of half a slice of bread), and juice boxes which accompany only select meals. Why not include a juice box with all meals instead of those awful powdered milk packets, (not everyone would or wants to drink that "milk"). I'm sure it gets tossed more often than not. I could go on but you get the point.

On the flip side though they do provide fresh fruit when available along with cookies and jello which is a nice touch. When I first signed on to Mom's Meals I received a promo box containing 14 meals which, I have to admit, were pretty good. That was the last box that was pretty good. Over the years, portion size, quality, flavor, general eye appeal have all diminished. There are also many delivery issues which have become progressively worse, damaged boxes, never delivered, or delivered to wrong address. Mom's has since initiated their own delivery service which is excellent if your fortunate enough to be put on a route. To be fair, before this review, I've spoken with their reps on several occasions, and participated in their surveys. Changes were promised, but promises get old when nothing changes. It may be that these reps never bring these complaints to their superiors, surveys never read by the right management, or it maybe it's just the bottom line drives what goes into a meal and how well it's prepared."

Decent Service

We order these for my 93 year old father. Overall the meals are decent and he seems to enjoy them. Especially for the price. The seals are very tight which if he had to remove them himself I believe would be very difficult. But sense someone is there to do it, I would rather have a good seal than an unfresh meal. We have been getting these for close to a year now and have only had one meal with a cracked plastic container. Some times I wish there was a little more variety. And when he had dental issues it was great to be able to get puréed food. But wish you could order it with the regular. But you have to order all your meals in one category. All in all it has been a very helpful and decent service to use.

Thanks for the Chance to Tell It Like It is

I cannot believe the high rating you gave Mom's Meals. Usually, the packaging is great, but I have gotten some that looked tossed anyway into the box in one stack, upside down, etc. I called and they acted like they didn't believe me, I sent pictures, they said they'd replace it this "ONE TIME", after that they said they had it checked before sending out. The tray is very small, 2 compartments, one very small, the amount of food is a joke, a 3-year-old could eat more. Very little of the food tastes good, I told them to come to get me and I'd show their "Chefs" how to cook. sometimes there is the entree and some kind of a fruity mish-mash.

If there are veggies there is none of that, the veggies taste like they were directly from the can, no spices at all. Sometimes I get as many as 4 oranges, 2 cookies, 2-3 tiny fruit juices, maybe 1 tiny applesauce OR jello. 1 bread, 1 bun, a few small packs of powdered milk. 1 little pkg. syrup for pancakes, maybe a pkg. of granola, very finely chopped. They show on my invoice, 10 meals, 23 snacks, and 3 "other" probably syrup". Unless they are taking the fruit stuff away from the meal, leaving just the entree, and classing it as a snack, and everything included in the meal besides the entree, there "Are NO SNACKS".

I've had unsealed trays, swollen trays, and can rarely tear from the corners to open. You are WAY off base with this review of Mom's Meals, it should have a "thumbs down and a frowning face". As far as the picture of the food plated it must be in a SAUCER, NOT a DINNER PLATE. I am also looking for a new provider, hopefully, there are more than the 2 you reviewed. Thanks for the chance to tell it like it is.

Quality and Service Declined

The quality and service have steadily declined over the last year or so. The menu options are fewer than previously and sometimes though on the menu they are not available, they will fulfill your order with whatever they choose without consulting you. Once I received my box but on the inside was someone else’s order and PERSONAL information therefore my order and PERSONAL information was sent to someone else. They only replaced 7 of the 14 meals and told me to eat the food I didn’t order nor want. I have repeatedly been sent outdated menus with my meals so ordering food is difficult. In the past month they’ve dropped over 6 meals with no replacements and ran out of food that comes with the food I have ordered.
