Family Caretaker Advice from Senior-Meals.org

Craig Caldwell

This website started out from years of personal experiences. My name is Craig, and I'm a family caretaker. I never really thought of myself as that. Just a son taking care of his older mom after my dad passed away.

My Mom lives at home alone. No doubt she's getting older, and finding it more difficult to get around. She drives much less, and lives on a very fixed budget. Occasionally she asks for financial help in the way of home heating oil, which is almost $5 a gallon now, and if she ever falls behind on some bills. It's no biggie. She's my Mom, and I am happy to be there for her whenever she needs me.

I am the oldest son of five, and the only one of us to stay in the same state. My brothers and sisters all live on the West Coast. I work and live in Manhattan. My Mom lives out on the east end of Long Island.

For those of you not familiar with the area, that used to be about a three-hour drive, round-trip. In today's world of heavy-traffic to get anywhere, it's closer to five or six hours. My Mom thinks she's a diabetic, but she's not. Over the years, it has become more difficult to shop and cook for herself. When she gets sick, she rarely gets out of bed. On my visits out to see her, I have noticed a gradual change of fresh food to canned and frozen food.

I have to say that I am also an amateur chef with a passion for cooking, so I notice these things. It was not unusual for me to spend a day visiting Mom and cooking up a bunch of meals for her to reheat in the microwave. Over time, it became much more difficult to get out to see more than once a week. The work schedule got as heavy as the traffic, and extended well past the once-traditional 40-hour week. I almost feel like a part-timer when I work 60 hours.

It was, and still is, very important for me to know that my Mom is eating properly and as often as she can. I don't know exactly, but about six years I started to look into senior meal delivery services. I wasn't interested in having every meal prepared for her, as much as I was interested in her having an inventory of delicious food in the house.

Senior Meal Delivery Tips

I have to say, I have literally purchased from every senior meal delivery more than once, unless they were totally awful. I doubt there is someone more familiar with this service than I am. It's not just the service mind you, as a chef, I'm interested in the menus and the quality of the senior meals I have delivered. As a businessman, I'm interested in the profits I estimate they make and the value of their service. Taking pictures and making notes became a hobby for me.

Some senior meal delivery services I refer to as "Medicaid" companies, such as Mom's Meals and Homestyle Direct. These delivery services have contracts with federal and local governments. They provide a service in that they do feed hungry seniors, but at a very low cost per meal to meet the demands of government regulations and their contracts.

They also offer a private-pay program where anyone in the country can buy these meals for $7. For some family caretakers, this may be the most you can afford to pay to feed your loved one. I have tried almost all of these meals and can give you some great insight as to which companies may work best for you, and which meals might provide the best value.
What are You Looking to Accomplish to Help Your Loved One?

I would assume if you're reading this, your story is somewhat similar to mine, except you don't have the experience I do. Let's assume getting some senior meals delivered is something you are interested in. Here is where you start:
  • What is your weekly and monthly budget?
  • Do you need meals that fit a nutritional profile?
  • Are you looking to add inventory or feed your loved one three meals a day?
  • Do you need convenience to be an important factor?
  • Do you have ample freezer space?
  • Do want only want to reheat meals in the microwave, or are you will get meals that get reheated in the oven or on the stovetop?
  • Can your loved one, or someone else, lift and carry a large box of delivered senior meals?
  • Are you looking to send a one-time package, perhaps as a gift?
These are important considerations because it will have a direct effect on where you would want to go to buy your senior meals. To see my recommendations, please visit Senior Meal Deliveries.

I sincerely hope this website helps you find the perfect senior meals that suit your needs and budget. And if you have any questions, please contact me.
Broken Packaging
Some senior meal delivery companies have chronic issues with broken seals and cracked trays. A 100% Satisfaction Guarantee is a must when choosing a senior meal service. Not all companies offer it.
