About Nutrisystem Prepared Meals

This will be our best Nutrisystem review ever, but we feel this weight loss service still has a long way to go to be considered a solution for senior weight loss and family caregivers tasked with the challenge of helping a loved one lose weight. First, we only purchased the frozen meals. The idea of having a cupcake, donut, or snack bar as a meal does not appeal to us. Seniors that need to lose weight will be successful with healthy balanced meals, something Nutrisystem does not offer.

Second, we should note that these meals cost between $3 and $4. HMR Entree is another weight loss service that competes in the same price range, but you have to add your own vegetables to create nutritionally balanced meals.
Nutrisystem does not have chefs or make any of their meals. They simply source existing premade food and add their own labeling. For the most part, you can get the same food from a Costco-type buyers club, or your local supermarket. The food is not "healthy" as it is packed with sodium and preservatives. It qualifies as diet food because the portion sizes are so small. You can eat lard in small portions and lose weight. BistroMD would be a weight loss service that offers balanced weight loss meals, but they average about $10 a meal.

This is a marketing company, and they do a great job at creating the illusion of easy weight loss. When out test order came in, my wife and two daughters flocked to the box like it had the magical power of instant weight loss. As they stare mesmerized by the bright gleam of light (which I can't see), they shrug off any of my attempts to explain healthy eating by way of proper nutrition. All they know is if they eat it, and just that, they will lose weight, and personal sacrifice is part of pain and agony associated with dieting.

That scenario doesn't work for family caretakers who are hoping to get their loved one to drop to a healthier weight. Over a third of seniors and elderly are obese, and most are subject to diabetic, low sodium, or some other form of nutritional meal planning. Plus, most seniors enjoy eating, and it is one of the pleasures of the day. Seniors need a proper weight loss meals without agony, pain, and sacrifice.

Overall, we felt the frozen meals we purchased are the best attempt by the company so far to provide their customers a real weight loss solution, but not quite there for family caretakers.

Our Nutrisystem Review

Like HMR Entree, we grade this service on a curve because of the low price point. One cannot expect amazing gourmet diet meals under $4 each, but there are some finds you may want to add to your freezer inventory.

Nutrisystem Meals We Would Order Again, If We Had To
  • Stuffed Shells - Make no mistake about it, you make this just as easily at home by buying some bulk stuffed shells and some Ragu sauce. Our guess would be the chunky garden sauce. You could also give your loved one more than two shells and a healthy serving of a frozen vegetable to make this a balanced meal. This passes if that is not an option for you.
  • Ravioli Formaggio - Same as above, you can make this yourself by visiting the local market, but if you don't want to cook, or a remote family caretaker, this is a pretty good value for the price. You still have to add vegetables though.
  • Chicken Fettuccine Alfredo - We found this to be better than most frozen dinners. The portion size is small, so it has to be supplemented with vegetables or a salad.
  • Roasted Turkey Medallions - Quite a value for the price. The turkey is real, not luncheon meat like you will find in most frozen dinners. The mashed potatoes were instant, but you have to expect that. All in all, not bad, and probably the best of the meals we tried.
Nutrisystem Meals We Would Not Order Again

For the most part, you can get a Lean Cuisine (or similar brand) from your local supermarket and have a better balanced meal than what you will have here. Oh, and you will probably be able to get two meals for the price of one of these meals.
  • Meatloaf Sandwich - This about the diameter of a White Castle slider. The bun does not reheat evenly with the highly processed meat. It is hard to imagine anyone looking forward to having this for lunch.
  • Mushroom Stuffed Chicken Breast - This would probably reheat better in the oven than the microwave but it is not worth the effort. A Lean Cuisine or similar frozen meal from the supermarket would be cheaper and more enjoyable.
  • Grilled Chicken Sandwich - Again, a very small bun that does not reheat evenly with the processed chicken breast. The fake machine-made grill marks confirm this is manufactured.
  • Hamburger - This is identical to the Meatloaf Sandwich. The bun doesn't reheat evenly with the processed meat, and it could hardly be considered a meal.
  • Turkey Ham and Cheese Omelet - This is one of those processed omelets you can get at some gas station convenience marts. The filling doesn't come close to the picture on the Nutrisystem website. Very disappointing.
  • Homestyle Pancakes - These are nothing you can't buy at the supermarket and reheat yourself. The only difference is the money you would be saving. There is nothing homestyle about them.
  • Whole Wheat Ricotta Crepes - Something really bad happened between concept and execution with this meal. the crepes reheat to a hard crusty shell, and they look nothing like the picture on their website. We think they are drowning in Ragu Chunky Garden sauce.
  • Chicken Enchilada - This probably has all the ingredients of a Chicken Enchilada but comes out of the microwave oven like a pile of mush. Okay if your loved one needs pureed meals.
  • Beef and Broccoli with Orzo - This may be one of the very few complete meals you can get with these weight loss meals. It tastes as unappetizing as it looks, which probably helps you to lose a few more pounds too.
  • Chicken and Vegetable Stir-Fry - It is hard for us to believe this has 3.2 out of 5 stars review on their website. Our loved one refused to take a second bite. It went in the trash.
  • Chicken Parmesan - The highly processed chicken breast was thinnest one we have ever seen. Really, like 1/8 of an inch. The breading was thicker. You can do better with a frozen dinner from the market.
  • Shrimp and Chicken Stir Fry - This must be their attempt to get some seafood on the menu, which they accomplish, but this is not a meal we would order again.
